- solid background: 1 color
- color-washed background: 2 layers for subtle texture
- face color: 1 color (always starts with a black base, layered with chosen color)
color guidance:
- indicate if a light or dark background is preferred — typically, light backgrounds pair with darker faces, and dark backgrounds pair with lighter faces.
- deep-on-deep or light-on-light combinations are also possible for a subtle, nuanced effect.
